Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment
Home   Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment
Carpal tunnel syndrome is prevalent in our society (this does not mean that it is normal). Working at computers for hours on end often places the wrists in an unhealthy position. There are also repetitive stress injuries that can occur from keyboards and other types of manual work.
Carpal tunnel symptoms include pain, numbness, and weakness in the wrist. It is most common in the thumb, index finger, and middle finger, but can also occur in the ring and little finger.
Dermatomes are areas of the skin that connect to a specific nerve root. There is a direct correlation between the thumb, index, and part of the middle finger to the C6 and C7 nerve roots, and a direct correlation between the other part of the middle finger, the ring finger, and the little finger with the C8 nerve root. Carpal tunnel symptoms can be the result of compression of nerve roots at the spine or compression of the peripheral nerve in the wrist, and it is critically important to determine which of these is the cause in order to treat the condition properly. Carpal tunnel surgery on the wrist can’t possibly correct a problem that originates in the neck.
Left untreated, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause permanent damage. If nerves remain compressed for an extended period, they can permanently lose their ability to conduct signals resulting in numbness or weakness that will never go away. There are also risks with damage to other structures in the body as a result of compensations for weakness and injury due to a lack of feeling.
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive and highly effective treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. Identifying the exact cause of the symptoms and correcting the problem restores nerve communication and, thereby, sensation and strength.
